Sore joints and injury management

Dr Euan Speirits heads up our Musculoskeletal Clinic. Dr Speirits has a special interest in orthopaedics and sports medicine and brings his knowledge and passion for this area of medicine to support the community of Queenstown with injury prevention, chronic injury management and sore joint treatment.

Possible diagnosis tools may involve MRI referrals where appropriate.

Dr Speirits will work with you to put together treatment or prevention plans focused on the goal of living an injury-free lifestyle.

You are able to self-refer into this clinic if you feel the description of the clinic aligns with your presenting problem, or it may be that your physio has referred you.

Dr Speirits has many years of experience as an orthopaedic registrar with a special interest in sports medicine.

He has competed in international sports both individual and team; tennis, basketball and competing at world level in gravity mountain biking.

Euan was previously Head Athlete Physician with the Crankworx World Tour for mountain biking and has worked with some of the world’s best action sports athletes on medical assessment, concussion, injury prevention, rehabilitation and training. He is an active part of the mountain bike community in Queenstown and many other riding communities around the world.

As this is an extended (30 minute) appointment, we are unable to take bookings through Manage My Health. Please call us our friendly First Impressions Team on 03 441 0500. All appointments for MSK are at Isle Street.

What to bring on the day

If you were not treated by us before for this injury, or if you have additional imaging from elsewhere to support treatment planning and diagnosis, please bring as much information with you as possible. If you have lodged your injury with ACC already, please bring your ACC number. If your consult is for injury prevention, please bring as much detail as you can about the sporting challenge or activity you are planning and wish to remain injury-free for. If you use any braces, immobilizing support, splints or slings, please bring these with you.

What can patients expect from MSK Clinic?

Patients who have either a chronic injury, sore joint/s or an upcoming sports challenge they want to remain injury-free for, are welcome to book into this clinic.

Some appointments will be covered by ACC, and some will not. For those whose presenting problem is not caused by an accident, please be aware that the cost is likely to be the same as an extended consult for your registration status. Please see fees below.

If you were not seen by QMC for original treatment of your injury when it first occurred, please bring as much information as you can, or if you are under the care of the physio, ask them to send us as much documentation as they can to info@qmc.co.nz. We will then upload the information for Dr Speirits prior to the appointment.

If your injury is ACC, but originally logged elsewhere, please bring your ACC number with you (your physio should have it). Please be prepared to complete another ACC form with us even if you have completed it elsewhere.

Book yourself in or ask physio for a referral

If you are already being treated by a physio, they can get in touch with us and refer you directly. Alternatively, you can book yourself in with us on 03 441 0500.

Consultation with Dr Euan Speirits

We encourage you to bring as much information as possible if your injury was treated elsewhere prior to you coming to QMC. You are also welcome to bring any support garments/braces with you so that Dr Speirits can assess how they aid or hinder your recovery.

The consultation is 30 minutes long and during this time, you will be assessed and discuss treatment options. You may be required to come back for one or more follow ups for further treatment, or to check in how the treatment plan is working and make adjustments.

You may be referred to MRI if appropriate.

Please note that steroid joint injections are a treatment option in some instances and can be discussed with Dr Speirits. He will explain outcomes, risks and benefits and he can make a clinical decision as to whether a steroid injection is the best course of action.

Payment

Please note that we may need to take a prepayment for this service on booking. Some consults will be covered by ACC in which case a co-payment will be the same as a 15-minute appointment, despite this being a 30-minute appointment. Some consults will not be covered by ACC where there is no injury or accident. In this case, prepayments will be required from every patient regardless of their registration status as the cost will be double that of a standard appointment.

Please see our Fees Page for consult fees.
