For the safety of everyone on our roads, all drivers must be medically fit to drive.

While it's hard to quantify, medical conditions contribute to road accidents. Driver License applications require you to complete a medical declaration stating if you have any conditions that may affect your ability to drive safely. Depending on the nature of the condition, you may be required to obtain a medical certificate supporting your application.

SERVICES

Driver License applications require you to complete a medical declaration stating if you have any conditions that may affect your ability to drive safely.

For the safety of everyone on our roads, all drivers must be medically fit to drive.

Driver's licence medicals are required when:

  • You are applying for or renewing a heavy vehicle licence (class 2,3,4,5), unless you've provided a certificate within the last five years.
  • You are applying for or renewing endorsements for passengers (P), vehicle recovery services (V), driving instruction (I) or testing officer (O) unless you've provided a certificate within the last five years.
  • You have a medical condition that may affect your ability to drive safely.
  • You're an older driver obtaining or renewing any licence class or endorsement beyond your 75th birthday.

What the Drivers licence medical examination will include:

  • You will be asked about your health history, including any medication you take.
  • The clinician will complete a clinical examination including cardiovascular health, respiratory health, eyesight, hearing, and coordination.
  • If you are over 75, you will be asked to complete a standard cognitive function assessment.

Over 75?

Once you turn 75, there are a few changes to the process for renewing your driver's licence:

  • Your new licence will be valid for only two to five years.
  • You need to present a medical certificate each time you apply.
  • If your clinician recommends, you must sit a 30-minute On-road Safety Test.
